Allan House embraces a modest yet determined approach, featuring a discreet extension to the rear of the heritage cottage. Drawing from the unseen forms of the existing home.

The steel portals evoke the rear double-gable form of a double-fronted Victorian, seamlessly integrating traditional aesthetics with contemporary functionality. The double-pitch roof, typically concealed from street view, is ingeniously extruded to delineate the living areas from the kitchen and dining space. Vertical trellised wires fill the larger gable, enabling the cultivation of grapevines by the owners. This element not only provides a natural shading device during summer, casting a dappled light into the living area, but also maximizes winter sunlight, thanks to the deciduous nature of the vines.

Intersecting
Strategy with
Design

This design exemplifies the efficient use of space, proving that exceptional visual appeal can be achieved without enlarging the building's footprint. It is a model of small-scale, inner-city urban living, prioritizing garden and green spaces that allow residents to grow and harvest their own food. The main bathroom and laundry are combined to conserve space, while the kitchen, dining, and living areas are minimized. The traditional four front rooms of the terrace are repurposed as bedrooms, an office, and a secondary living area, foregoing additional walk-in robes and bathrooms, thereby preserving the original layout’s integrity.
